For the Borderline project, commissioned by Derry~Londonderry City of Culture 2013, I converted the interior of a used caravan into two distinct halves—one related to Irish culture and the other to British culture. Many of the items have direct counterparts in both cultures and are displayed symmetrically, each on its corresponding side.
Throughout 2013, I showed the caravan in Ebrington Square outside the venue of the Turner Prize 2013 Exhibition, as well as at border points between County Derry~Londonderry (Northern Ireland) and County Donegal (Ireland). Throughout 2014, I exhibited the project at Millennium Court Arts Centre, Portadown. It has also been presented across numerous other locations, including The MAC, Belfast (2013); The Lyric Theatre, Belfast as part of Bounce Festival 2014; ADF Gallery, Belfast as part of Culture Night Belfast 2014; The Model, Sligo (2014); an interface in North Belfast (2014); Siamsa Tíre - National Folk Theatre of Ireland, Tralee (2019); Havelock House, Belfast (2022); Make North Docks, Liverpool as part of the Independent Biennial (2025, sponsored by University of Atypical, Belfast); Rua Red, Dublin (2025); Artlink, Fort Dunree, Buncrana (2025) and The Seamus Heaney Centre, Queen's University Belfast (2025), both supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and the Centre for Creative Practices; and Butler Gallery, Kilkenny (2026), among others.
Since moving to Northern Ireland in 2010, I have often grappled with the nuances and distinctions between Irish and British cultures within this complex society. The project has allowed me to learn and understand these cultural subtle shifts through direct conversation with visitors who enter the caravan. I continue to develop the work by constantly adding objects, adapting the display, and rebalancing the two sides over time—turning the caravan into an evolving micro-museum.
Maintaining an equal balance between the Irish and British sides presents a unique challenge. Sourcing certain traditional Irish objects locally can be difficult, leading me to import items from the USA, where the Irish diaspora maintains deep connections to their heritage roots. As a Japanese artist, I approach this project from an outsider's perspective, bringing a degree of neutrality to the work—free from local religious or political affiliations. While enticing people inside a caravan (traditionally perceived as a private space) can be challenging, those who step inside become fully engaged, sharing their own personal histories and perspectives on culture and identity.
